Oncoplastic Surgery

Dr Burgers is dedicated to making patients cancer free while still feeling beautiful.

Depending on the cancer size and the patients breast shape and size, breast conservation surgery, also known as a lumpectomy, can alter the shape and contour of the breast appearance. Dr Burgers’s mentor, Dr Silverstein noted that during cosmetic breast reduction or breast lifts, plastic surgeons purposefully change the breast size and shape. This inspired the idea to combine cancer surgery principles with plastic surgery principles.

Oncoplastic breast surgery combines both the efforts of a cancer surgeon with a plastic surgeon to reshape or recreate the breast. More importantly, Dr Burgers works simultaneously with board certified plastic surgeons, so both cancer removal and reconstruction are performed in one operative procedure.
Patients choosing oncoplastic surgery are more optimistic and confident, when they can look forward to aesthetically pleasing results following recovery.

Advantages include:

Wider margins

Improved aesthetic results

Outpatient surgery

(go home the same day)

Fewer surgeries

Covered by most insurance plans

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you do an oncoplastic procedure without the plastic surgeon?

A: Oncoplastic procedures are traditionally divided into 2 levels- level I and level II. This is defined by the amount of tissue that needs to be removed to achieve a successful cancer surgery. Dr Burgers performs Level I oncoplastic procedures independently – these also fall under the category of hidden scar surgery. With Level I oncoplasty, Dr Burgers is locally bringing breast tissue together. Level II involves removal of more tissue volume and more extensive rearrangement. For level II oncoplasty, Dr Burgers works with a highly qualified plastic surgeon.

Q: Do I have to stay in the hospital overnight?

A: No- surgery is done as an outpatient with both Dr Burgers and the plastic surgeon working during the same operative procedure. In most cases, you will be able to go home the same day.

Q: Is it good to operate on my “normal” breast?

A: It is safe to operate on the unaffected breast. Each patient’s decision is a very personal one. The goal with oncoplastic surgery is to achieve your desired aesthetic outcome. This is a good option for women who may have considered a breast reduction in the past- not only does it provide the opportunity for symmetry, but may relieve other symptoms like back and neck pain that may be caused by larger breasts.

Q: How do I find a plastic surgeon?

A: Dr Burgers works with several excellent plastic surgeons in the area who share her philosophy on cancer care. When you see her in the office, she will provide you with their information.

We look forward to meeting you!
